There is a misconception that cooking pasta is super easy, all you have to do is dump it in boiling water, walk away for ten minutes come back and it’s ready! But we can assure you it’s not that easy.  From properly salting the water to using the right amount of water, there’s actually a lot that goes into cooking the perfect pasta. So we have compiled a few pasta perfect tips for cooking it right!

1. Don’t forget the salt

As a rule of thumb: 10-100-1000. That‘s the ratio of cooking salt (10g) to pasta (100g) to water (1000ml).  The key is to add the salt when the water boils then add the pasta!

2. Add enough water

For every 100g of pasta add 1 Litre of water in a large saucepan. Pasta releases a lot of starch when cooking thus a higher water content prevents the liquid becoming thick and your pasta slimy.

3. Pick the right pasta shape

For delicate sauces (with olive oil or tomatoes) spaghetti or other long pastas and for heavier sauces (with meats or large chunks of veggies) choose tube pastas or other shapes.

4. Keep tasting

Cooking times on the packaging are not fool proof so instead always taste as you cook. Furthermore checking your pasta is important as most people boil water differently.  The best pasta taste is for it to be tender yet al dente.

5. Stir for a minute

This will prevent your pasta sticking together. This happens as the pasta‘s starches are released within the first few minutes of cooking, causing pasta to stick to together.

6. Never add olive oil or butter to boiling water

In contrast to popular belief oil doesn’t prevent the pasta from sticking together whilst cooking, if anything it will actually coat the pasta and prevent your sauce from sticking to your noodles properly.

7. Keep some pasta water aside

Reserve some of the cooking liquid in case you need it to make your sauce. Pasta water contains starches which help to thicken up sauces, make them glossy, and coat all noodles perfectly.
